William Irvine, A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy Oxford U. Press, 2008

Contemporary misconceptions about Stoicism abound. As William Irvine explains, the ancient Stoic philosophers were far from grim and unfeeling; instead, they actively sought joy and tranquility. The Stoics also prescribed specific psychological techniques for, among other things, reining in our desires, dealing with loss, and responding to insults.

Amazing! I love Against the Grain and I am routinely challenged to think outside my reality when I listen. But this last program may have been one of those life altering experiences that you can only recognize years later. I can't wait to get my hands on Irvine's book. Thank you for always having such wonderful guests and the insights to ask important questions.

Fantastic program!!!!!! I
